World number one Judd Trump beat China’s Lei Peifan to set up a quarter-final against Shaun Murphy at the Players Championship.
England’s Trump produced a clinical display on the show table in Telford to win 6-2, with the turning point coming in the sixth frame when Lei missed what appeared to be an easy shot to level 3-3.
Trump then took full advantage as he won the next three frames to progress.
Murphy, meanwhile, held off a spirited display by fellow Englishman Barry Hawkins to win 6-4.
Hawkins fought back from 3-0 down to level the match but Murphy kept his cool to get the job done.
Australian Neil Robertson will play Mark Selby in the second round after coming from behind to beat Stuart Bingham 6-4.
England’s Selby – aiming to win his third title of the season – secured breaks of 132, 128 and 99 on his way to beating China’s Si Jiahui 6-3.
