For the third straight year, Jesuit took home two state trophies.
The Crusaders’ boys and girls swim teams each won their respective team titles at the OSAA Class 6A Swimming State Championships on Saturday at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center.
“For the ladies, our mid-distance and distance swimmers, we had three in the 400 free today and three in the 500 (freestyle). That really is a big boost,” said Jesuit coach Bryan Butcher. “They’re juniors. I don’t think there (were) any seniors today. They’re driven to do that.
“On the guys’ side, we have a lot of talented breaststrokers and freestylers. Having that depth really helped us. It’s going to be hard because we’re losing three seniors, but the sophomores and juniors that swam today, a lot of them got (personal) best times. They’re motivated. They’re excited. It all came together.”
Jesuit’s girls team totaled 118 points to claim the championship. Ida B. Wells was second with 77 points, and Lincoln was third with 72 points.
“I think the team we have, the girls that we have, we all try very hard and we’re very hard-working,” said Jesuit junior Stela Sufuentes. “We’re always there for each other. I think that’s the biggest thing—we’re a tight-knit group.”
Though the Crusaders girls racked up the team points, they didn’t claim a gold medal until the last race of the day, winning the girls 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:34.8.
“I’m just excited for next year. I still have one year left,” Sufuentes said. “I’m probably going to have this same relay next year, too, with the same girls. I’m just excited to have one year left with them.”
Jesuit’s boys team totaled 126 points for the team title. Sunset was second with 95 points, and McMinnville was third with 77 points.
As for the possibility of winning four straight team titles next year, Butcher said his girls team has a good shot because everyone is returning for next season. The boys, however, may have to dig deeper in order to claim another trophy.
“The girls, there’s nobody that’s graduating. They’re all coming back,” he said. “The guys, it’s going to be a tougher road for them because we’re losing some strong seniors. But Jesuit, whoever steps up, they see what they do. Let’s see if they step up next year.”
A couple of OSAA records were broken on Saturday.
Nelson junior Drew Eubanks set a new OSAA record in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 52.98, besting the previous record of 53.36 set by Campbell McKean of Caldera last year.
“It’s great. I was 53.00 in December, and I was really sad I didn’t get to 52. That’s been a mark I’ve been shooting for, and it’s been motivating me for the past two months,” Eubanks said. “I’m really glad I hit that.”
Eubanks also won his third consecutive state gold medal in the event on Saturday.
The Nelson junior, who is committed to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, had set his sights on the state record last year but fell just short.
“I was pretty disappointed that I didn’t get it. I think I said in an interview that I was hoping to get that record since freshman year,” Eubanks said. “I knew I had it in me. It just turned out in the race, I missed it by 0.1. That was definitely a motivating factor for me leading into the next couple of months. I feel like ever since that meet, that race, I’ve been so much more confident. I’ve been way more happy. This is the best I’ve ever been, and I think it was a really good learning moment for me.”
Westview set a new OSAA record in the boys 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:33.11, topping the previous record of 1:33.14 set by Glencoe in last year’s meet.
“We were really excited off of that. For me, John and Ethan (sophomores John Sommers and Ethan Sommers), we’re in the same club team. The people who previously got the record were also in our club team,” said Westview senior Matthew So. “We were just trying to see if we could live up to the name of the seniors who were just before us. I’m happy that we were able to beat it.”
So added that while he’s been swimming for his club for 10 years, this year was his first competing in high school.
“John and Ethan, they convinced me to do high school swimming just for the relay, just so we could break these records and try winning state for the relay specifically,” So said.
So will go on to swim at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
Lake Oswego senior AnneMarie Vlaic defended both her titles from last year, winning a second straight gold medal in both the girls 100-yard butterfly and the girls 500-yard freestyle.
“This year, I knew that I was going to have some competition. Honestly, this year, I wasn’t even trying to think about winning the race. I was trying to think about having fun,” Vlaic said. “It’s my senior year. It’s my last year swimming in high school. I’m so grateful to have these opportunities. I wasn’t necessarily gunning for it. I was just going into it and seeing how it would be because I knew the competition was going to be high.”
Vlaic will go on to swim for Southern Methodist University in Dallas next year.
“I’m happy that this chapter ended so well for me,” she said. “I’m grateful for all the friends I made along the way. I’m happy that the races went so well for me. I’m excited to go to college. I’m happy with my results and my high school swimming career as a whole.”
