The Bishop O’Connell Knights swimming and diving teams concluded their winter high-school seasons with third-place finishes at the recent Virginia private school state meet in Stafford.

The improvement in places from a year ago were significant for O’Connell, when the boys were eighth and the girls 16th.

Both teams scored roughly the same number of points, the girls 194 and the boys 190. Richmond schools won the championships, the Collegiate School first in the girls with 358 points and St. Christopher’s School winning the boys with 299.5.

Neither O’Connell team won an event at this season’s state meets, held at the Jeff Rouse Swim & Sport Center. The highest finishes were seconds by O’Connell boys swimmer Paul Mullen and freshman diver Rai Detten.

Mullen was runner-up in the 500 freestyle race and finished third in the 200 free. He also swam on the third-place 400 free relay. Detten had a strong season, with top finishes in multiple meets, including some victories.

Also for the O’Connell boys at the state meet, Timmy Adye was fourth in the 50 free and sixth in the 100 free, Graham Rowan was sixth in the 100 backstroke and seventh in the 200 free, and Keaghan Fahle was 16th in the 200 free. Adye and Rowan swam on the 400 free relay.

O’Connell’s medley relay placed fifth and the 200 free relay 11th.

Leading the O’Connell girls was swimmer Stella Mastroianni. She was third in the 100 butterfly and fourth in the back, and swam on relays. Kalyn O’Hara was seventh in the 500 free and 11th in the individual medley, and Audrey McKeen was eighth in the breaststroke.

Elliott Rowan was seventh in the back and 10th in the fly, Anna Sullivan was 14th in the 500 free and 16th in the breast, the medley relay was fourth, the 200 free relay sixth and the 400 free relay seventh.

In girls diving, O’Connell’s Lili Lepore was fourth, Catherine Ayers fifth and Maggie Levi 15th.
