An eye-catching name has appeared on the Scotland U20 team sheet ahead of their clash with England’s youngsters this Friday evening.
Reuben Logan – son of sporting and broadcasting royalty – will start at number 8 for the next instalment of the U20 Six Nations. The 19-year-old is one of five changes made by Scotland manager Kenny Murray, and there will be a keen interest in how he performs.
With former international gymnast and long-serving BBC presenter Gabby Logan as a mother, and 70-cap Scottish rugby international Kenny Logan as a father, teenage up-and-comer Reuben could be forgiven for feeling a tinge of pressure as he makes his way through the ranks.
Standing 6ft 5in tall and weighing more than 18 stone, Logan already has the stature of a professional rugby star. And he will be keen to put that physicality to good use on the international stage this week.
Logan, who is on the books of Northampton Saints, was born in London and represented England at youth level. But he made the switch over to Scotland last month – a move which he claims has gone down well with his family.
“[My dad] is pretty happy, I think,” he said. “He pretended when I was with England that he was happy with it, but he really wasn’t, and he’s made that very clear now. He struggled with it.”
On his mum’s reaction, Logan added: “I think she was just as emotional as my dad, because, obviously, she’s seen my dad wear that shirt.
“When I was younger, I was involved in the English set-up, and that was for a number of reasons, because I wanted to sign for an English club and it’s much easier to get involved with an English club if you’re in the English pathway.
“I’ve always been a Scottish fan and when you see your dad play for Scotland, and you see all the rugby around the house, it’s obviously quite inspiring. So when you need an opportunity, and you consider yourself Scottish, it’s obviously quite an easy choice to make.”
With her son aiming to make a splash at the U20 Six Nations, Gabby Logan continues to lead the BBC’s coverage of the senior tournament, which resumes on Saturday with Wales taking on Ireland and England facing the Scots.
