The 19-year-old from Inverness has earned a place on the Flandrien Scholarship Program as he looks to pursue his dream of becoming a professional cyclist.

The bike mechanic, who works at Dryburgh Cycles in Dingwall, heads to Brackel on Wednesday, where he will take part in a seven-week cycling program along with top young cyclists from across Europe.

It is the latest achievement for Clare, who races for cycling team Torvelo, and is being touted as one of the most promising young cyclists in Scotland.

He says he is delighted to earn a place on the scholarship program as he looks to take his cycling career up a level.

He said: “I am really grateful to be given a scholarship as they are only given to a few people over the course of the year.

“I will race twice a week and be cycling full time as well as learn to take part in a team situation.

“I am there for seven weeks, it will give me the chance to compete with no distractions. The racing out there is a different level compared to in Scotland so I think it will be a good experience.”

Clare is already making a big impression in road racing and time trials. Last year, he won the Cairngorm Hill Climb time trial.

In road racing last year, his best result was third place at the Dick Longdragon Road Race in Aberdeenshire. He also competed at the Scottish Road Race Championship where he said he learned a lot from to take forward in his career.

He said: “The highest level of road racing I have competed in was the Scottish Championship where I finished 17th.

“It was the scariest road race and it was the most nervous that I have been, but I was happy with how I did.

“It was the highest level of race I had been involved in, but I had learned the most from any race I have competed in. The rider quality at the competition made it such a full on race.”

Clare was first inspired to take up cycling from his father Paul, who regularly competed at Etape Loch Ness. He started to compete seriously after 2020 and has progressed to competing at national level.

He credits his coach Wim Chamlet for helping him get to this level.

Clare’s aim is to one day compete at the top level of cycling and says being part of the scholarship program is a positive step forward for him.

He said: “This is definitely the biggest challenge for me. The big thing for me would be to get picked up for a big team in Europe so that I can develop my cycling even further.

“I would like to race in the likes of the Tour de France, that is every cyclist’s dream as it is the biggest race you can cycling race you can compete in.”
