Former EIU baseball player Trey Sweeney has been called up to the Major Leagues and is set to make his MLB debut for the Detroit Tigers, who face off against the New York Yankees tonight (August 16) at 5:40 p.m.
The Louisville native became the third Panthers baseball player to be selected in the first round when he was picked by the New York Yankees as the 20th overall pick of the 2021 MLB Draft. Sweeney was later traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers before being moved to the Tigers organization at the end of July.
He becomes the 13th former EIU player to play in the Major Leagues and the third to make their debut this season, joining pitchers Will Klein (Kansas City Royals) and Hayden Birdsong (San Francisco Giants).
Before the trade, Sweeney appeared in 96 games for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Oklahoma City, hitting .254/.334/.427 with 22 doubles, three triples, 13 home runs, and 62 RBI. In 11 games with Detroit Triple-A affiliate Toledo Mud Hens, Sweeney impressed by hitting .381/.447/.667 with six doubles, two homers, and nine RBI.
Sweeney will be the first EIU player to play for the Tigers at the MLB level. Prior to this season, the last EIU player to play in the big leagues was Tim Bogar from 1993-2001 with the New York Mets, Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers.
