It’s a popular game in Europe and earlier this month the first-ever cricket tournament was held in the Okanagan.

Organized by Vernon-based North Okanagan Cricket Club, the inaugural T-10 Cricket tournament is being hailed a success.

T-10 Cricket is the shortest format of the game, where each team has only 10 ‘overs’ to score as many runs as possible.

Organizers say the format is “fast-paced, action-packed, and unpredictable, with every ball making a difference.”

The tournament attracted three teams: The Vernon Strikers, Okanagan United Sports Club and Okanagan Lions.

The Lions roared their way to the top as they proved the dominant team throughout the tournament, winning all their matches convincingly and being crowned the champions.

Vernon Monashee MLA Harwinder Sandhu presented the Lions with the winner’s trophy.

NOCC, who were the hosts and the first hard-ball cricket team in Vernon, has been playing cricket in the Okanagan since 2020 and finished the tournament in third place.

The Okanagan United and Vernon Strikers participated in their first ever hard ball cricket tournament with the United team becoming the runners up.

The NOCC, based out of Vernon, was the brainchild behind the tournament.

“This is the first-ever T-10 cricket tournament in this region, and we hope to make this an annual encounter, promoting cricket at all levels,” said NOCC president Sanjeewa Ranasinghe.

NOCC team member Hashan Sirisena said “Cricket is the fastest growing sport in Canada, and a great community builder, promoting sportsmanship and unity among different people and cultures.”

The NOCC is also looking into establishing a cricket grounds in Vernon.

The club os working with the City of Vernon and the MLA’s office, so that their players do not have to keep travelling to Kelowna and other areas of the region to conduct practices and play games.
