India refuse hosting job of Women's T20 World Cup, Bangladesh concerns

India has withdrawn from contention to host the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup should the International Cricket Council (ICC) be required to move the tournament from Bangladesh.

Due to political turmoil in Bangladesh, the ICC is monitoring the unrest as it considers alternative options for the upcoming tournament scheduled to take place in October.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants… The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board,” the ICC’s statement wrote.

Initial reports suggested India, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates as the front runners to take over hosting rights, however, no location has yet to be confirmed.

Several nations including England and Australia have issued strong travel advisories since an interim government was installed in Bangladesh.

Indian cricket board secretary Jay Shah said he “flatly refused” the possibility of taking ownership of the tournament, with India set to host the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025.

“They (ICC) have asked us if we would conduct the World Cup. I have categorically said no,” Shah told Times of India.

“We would still be in the monsoon season and next year we are going to host the Women’s ODI World Cup.

“I do not want to give the impression that I want to hold consecutive World Cups.”

The Women’s T20 World Cup will feature 10 teams, including England and Scotland, with 23 matches set to take place across Dhaka and Sylhet.

Australia’s tournament is set to commence on October 4 where they will face Sri Lanka.
