Birmingham, Ala. – With kickoff just over two weeks away, the Samford football team participated in the squad’s second scrimmage of preseason camp at the Samford University Intramural Fields on Friday morning.
“I thought the intensity was much better,” head coach Chris Hatcher said following the 90-minute scrimmage. “All in all, I think we are where we need to be right now, but next week is going to be a big test for us to take that next step.”
On the offensive side of the ball, the head bulldog noted the progress his offensive skill positions have made during the first half of preseason camp.
“We played a little bit better at receiver today,” Hatcher said. “We limited some guys and then our quarterbacks have been playing a lot better this week than they did the first week.”
After a well-executed week of practice, the Bulldogs battled some inconsistencies on Friday while trying to develop some depth for the upcoming season.
“Just execution and knowing what to do. I thought all week leading up to the scrimmage that we just looked crisper in our execution,” Hatcher said. “It lacked a little bit today, especially offensively. We were trying some new combinations of guys out there. We need some guys to step in and provide some depth. I feel good about our front line on both sides of the ball. We needed some depth and that is what we’ll need to continue to improve on next week.”
Samford opens the season on the road at West Georgia (Aug. 31) and at Florida (Sept. 7) before welcoming Alabama State to town on Saturday, Sept. 14 for the Home Opener.
