HAMMOND, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University women’s soccer team will kick off the 2024 season with a home opener against Grambling State Friday evening at 7 p.m.
Southeastern, which was picked sixth in the Southland Conference preseason polls, will look to start off its non-conference schedule with a win in Strawberry Stadium. The match versus the Lady Tigers (1-0) will air on ESPN+. Live stats will be accessible on the women’s soccer schedule page at www.LionSports.net.
SLU returns 20 letter winners from last season’s team that finished 6-10-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play. The Lady Lions roster also features 12 talented newcomers, as third-year head coach Nathan Gillespie enters the season with high hopes.
Senior Kelsey Fuller is the leading returning scorer for Southeastern, after netting two goals last fall. Katie Brown, Emma Jones, Maggie Denison and Nicole O’Neill also found the net last season. Hannah McCord and Hailie Yoder shared the team lead with three assists.
In the net, Anna Blakenship returns for SLU. The Melissa, Texas native recorded 12 saves and a 0.97 goals against average.
Grambling State finished with a 15-5-4 overall record last season and 8-0-1 in SWAC conference play. The reigning SWAC women’s soccer champion recently gained six All-SWAC honors, as Aria Whitney was named SWAC Soccer Preseason Midfielder of the Year. Sophia Lezizidis is the team’s top returning scorer with seven goals last season.
The Lady Tigers opened their season this morning with a 7-0 win over LSU-Alexandria. Lezizidis, Jayla Gage and Charlotte Cuthbertso each scored a pair of goals to extend Grambling State’s lead against the Generals. Freshman Adalie Hernandez also found the net early in the contest to contribute to the win. Goalkeepers Madison Covey-Taylor and Kaia Bace split time in net and recorded three saves.
Southeastern will return to Strawberry Stadium to complete their last non-conference home game Sunday, Aug. 25 against South Alabama at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to stick around after Sunday’s game for post-match autographs with the Lady Lions.
