PELLA— Looking to ride the momentum of last year’s improvement, all but one starter return for the Central College women’s tennis team.
A young Dutch squad posted a 10-12 mark last season, taking fifth in the American Rivers at 4-4. Last year’s De Haan Most Valuable Player Award winner Madi Whalen (junior, Kansas City, Mo. / Park Hill) heads a balanced Central squad.
“Our depth is the best aspect of the team,” coach Ryun Farrell said. “At four, five, and six singles is where we are really tough”
Ferrell said his players will benefit from last year’s experience.
“They have the knowledge of how to do and what not to do,” Ferrell said. “The learning curve is not as big. They have also been training more than they ever have and this is a great opportunity to do something special.”
The Dutch are eyeing a climb in the conference standings.
“There are a few of us that have a shot at second in the conference” Ferrell said. “Third place on down can be an all-out war, which is exciting.”
Home matches this year will look different with the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex tennis courts getting replaced, the Dutch will compete at Pella High School’s new courts.
“Pella High has of the nicest high school tennis facilities in the country,” Ferrell said. “We are excited and thankful to be able to practice and play there.”
The Dutch start off their fall season Aug. 31 in Kirksville, Missouri in the Truman State Invitational.
