DOWN THE STRETCH

• The local contenders in the Del Mar Oaks on Saturday must watch out for Whiskey Decision, who comes in off three consecutive wins in Kentucky and Delaware. Whiskey Decision (Umberto Rispoli riding) and Buchu (Martin Garcia) are the two new faces in a race that has been won in seven of the past 17 years by fillies shipped in by out-of-state barns. Iscreamuscream (Hector Berrios), Circle of Trust (Reylu Gutierrez) and Medoro (Antonio Fresu) are among the California-based runners.

• Linda’s Gift (Tiago Pereira) can continue her domination of long-distance turf races in the 1⅜-mile CTT and TOC Stakes at Del Mar on Friday. Richard Mandella-trained Linda’s Gift’s only recent loss came in a 1⅛-mile, Grade I race won by Anisette. She’s 4 for 4 in Grade III and ungraded stakes of 1¼ miles and up. Challenging this time are frequent runner-up Musical Rhapsody (Mike Smith) and easy allowance-level winner Sunset Glory (Rispoli).

• Del Mar’s Friday first post moves to 3 p.m. from 4 p.m. starting this week.

• Los Alamitos’ Saturday night card features three trials for the Sept. 7 Golden State Derby. BP Cartel Policy, Mask Mandate and Political Rivalry lead the contenders for the 400-yard race.

• The 3X3 (“three by three”) wager that debuted Thursday at Del Mar has received little in the way of advertisement because it’s considered a test run, a track official said. Santa Anita hopes to offer the bet at its Sept. 27-Oct. 27 meet. The 3X3 challenges bettors to pick three trifectas in a row – in each day’s last three races – at a cost of $1 per combination. That’s a tall order, but there are consolation payoffs. It’s available at first only to bettors at Del Mar, Los Alamitos and satellites.

• Getaway Car’s 5½-length victory in the Best Pal Stakes at Del Mar on Sunday impressed speed-figure makers. The race run in 1:10.73 for 6 furlongs earned a figure of 99 from Equibase, the highest for a 2-year-old stakes in 2024. It received an 85 Beyer figure, fifth on the Daily Racing Form’s list, which includes non-stakes races (a Saratoga maiden win by Ferocious, given a 96 Beyer, tops the DRF list). Getaway Car, trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Juan Hernandez, is expected to run next in the Sept. 8 Del Mar Futurity. Opponents could include Baffert-trained Gaming, whose maiden win Sunday rated a 94 from Equibase and an 81 Beyer, less than two lengths slower than Getaway Car.

• The Del Mar main track appeared to favor front-running horses again last weekend. Eight of 10 races Saturday and Sunday were won by horses who led or contested the early pace. Based on Brisnet statistics, 55% of main-track races at 5½ furlongs, 6 furlongs and 1 mile were won in wire-to-wire style from July 20 through Sunday, up from 24% at this meet in 2023.

• Gov. Gavin Newsom appointed John Carvelli, of Newport Beach, to replace Wendy Mitchell on the California Horse Racing Board. Carvelli, a former executive at Liberty Dental Plan, is a member of the North American Boxing Federation executive committee. Mitchell was appointed earlier this year to the California Medical Board. Carvelli’s appointment requires confirmation by the state Senate.
