Terrace Cricket Grounds Opened

Saturday, August 10th, afternoon marked an influential day for the Terrace and Thornhill community, with the official opening of the first cricket pitch in the North West region. Chief Glenn Bennett and MP Taylor Bachrach both made appearances as well, showing their appreciation for the growing sport in the Canadian market.

The opening serves as crucial for the community, as from Prince Rupert to Chilliwack, there was just one cricket pitch, which was located in Prince George.

“The dream is to build this sport in this town” said Sukhjinder Grewal, one of the pioneers of reviving cricket in the northwest area. “This is a passion for the players, they can’t stop playing cricket. They put their body on the line for the game.”

Sukhjinder, who has been there since day 1, has been the originator of the North West BC Cricket Association. Once he got in touch with President Kam Siemens, it became that much easier to acquire players and seek out a real pitch.

The association is looking to create opportunities for the youth and for women as well, led by Head Coach Steve Hawyes. Down the line, they are looking to expand to outside areas such as Prince Rupert and Smithers.
