Hamilton: “Fantastic to have the top teams so close”

The first part of the season, which ended with the Spa event on 28 July, saw a varied fight at the top which saw Red Bull, Ferrari, McLaren and Mercedes alternating on the top step of the podium. Discussing the unpredictability at the top, which saw four teams achieve victory compared to last year in which Ferrari was the only one to break Red Bull’s hegemony with Carlos Sainz’s success in Singapore, Lewis Hamilton expressed all his satisfaction with this new phase of “positive uncertainty” that Formula 1 is going through.

Mercedes, after a difficult start to the championship, managed to get back on track by correcting the car with targeted developments that have positively directed the Mercedes season. The German team has in fact achieved three victories, only Red Bull has achieved more successes, two of which bear the signature of Hamilton who will be a new Ferrari driver from next year.

“I think it’s really fantastic for this sport to have teams and drivers so close – said Hamilton, quoted by Formula1.com – The level of drivers today is really important and incredible. We didn’t expect to compete with McLaren or Red Bull at this point in the season, seeing how we started. It will be a fantastic second half of the season for us, I’m sure of it.”

The seven-time world champion, shifting attention to the second half of the championship, said: “Can we become antagonists for the title fight? No, but we have real high hopes. In the last few races we have provided fantastic performances, we must continue in this way by starting our weekends better. McLaren was very fast in Belgium, we were just further ahead at the start of the race. We have to keep pushing.”
