Riverdale, N.Y. — It’s a glorious day in the small town of Harwich on Cape Cod. The hometown Mariners woke up as champions of the Cape Cod Baseball League after defeating the two-time defending champions Bourne Braves 4-3 in the final game of the best-of-3 championship series on Monday night. Manhattan assistant coach Steve Englert is the longtime skipper for Harwich who led the Mariners to their first title since 2011.
“It’s extremely difficult to win,” Englert told GoJaspers.com. “Every team has top flight players…you have to catch some breaks along the way. What was special about this season was that they all wanted to be here and they competed every day.”
Englert has managed Harwich since 2003 and helped capture the Mariners first Cape Cod League title in 21 years when he led them to the mountaintop in 2008. Englert and Harwich also won the prestigious league in 2011, which set off a 13-year waiting period prior to Monday night’s championship clincher.
“I’m so happy for Coach Englert,” Manhattan head coach Steven Rosen said. “When you’re lucky enough to have spent the amount of time with him that I have, you get to see what truly goes into leading a Cape Cod league team year-round. Nobody cares more about those kids, the tradition of the league, and playing the game the right way.”
Before arriving in Riverdale in 2022, Englert’s collegiate coaching career has taken him all over the country—with stops at Kansas State, Northeastern, Boston College, Holy Cross, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Richmond–but his presence has always been planted in the cape during the summer months. Last year, Englert captured his 400th win on the cape, earning him the nickname “Mr. 400” from Manhattan coaching staff.
Rosen spent the 2022 summer working as Harwich’s pitching coach. He often thinks back to that experience working under Englert and how the veteran coach’s commitment to his craft was eye opening to see. That still reigns true today, albeit with the roles reversed for Rosen and his Jaspers assistant.
“In my one year in Harwich I was surrounded by the most amazing people,” Rosen said. “I couldn’t be more thrilled for all of them. “
Englert has played a hand in producing over 100 current professional baseball players, including a few dozen current big leaguers. Big names such as DJ Lemahieu, Jonathan India and Josh Donaldson have all been coached by Englert in Harwich.
“I love coaching and developing players, to me that’s the most important thing,” Englert said. “I’m excited to get back to Manhattan to help Steve.”
