Back at 7f PUNK POET can build on an eyecatching seasonal return over an inadequate trip to record a third turf success, despite slight ground concerns. Pier Pressure rates a major threat after a recent course success, while Kings Time and Emporio are also respected in a handicap in which none can be safely ruled out.
This is an ease in grade for Al Rufaa (second choice) and he can go well back on AW. Dutch Kingdom, City Of York and Get The Music On all have something to recommend them in an open race but ERNIE’S VALENTINE has conditions to suit, is on a winning mark and could be the answer from a handy draw.
Toronto Raptor and Caballo De Mar (second choice) are solid options but SELECTIVITY is a tempting alternative. She didn’t feature on her handicap debut but promises to be better suited by this soft ground if the profile of her brother Tritonic is anything to go by. A visor could give her a lift and trainer Marcus Tregoning is having a good spell.
A small field and a case can be made for most. Common Practice won a beginners’ chase easily last time and he is interesting now back on the Flat for last year’s winning yard. The Harrington pair can’t be discounted but narrow preference is for SMOOTH TOM. He was runner up in this last year, he is back for a repeat bid off the same mark and he’s been freshened up since a below par effort over hurdles at Punchestown. This trip is a worry for Falcon Eight.
Much the most appealing option is EQUION who signalled an even bigger run was in his locker when sitting closer to the pace than ideal in a more competitive race at Haydock last time. He competes off a career-low mark here having been eased 3lb. Perhaps class-dropper Spirit Of The Bay will prove best of the rest.
Useful hurdler Parramount still has potential on the Flat and he’s respected on this drop back in trip and grade. Buxted Too also enters the reckoning on his return to 1m4f, while Luna Effect may have needed the run on his stable debut last month and looks interesting on his best form during the winter. However, it might be worth siding with THE COLORIST, who is still unexposed after only six starts and could resume his progress at this new trip.
