DK Network recaps the latest horse racing action on DK Horse and provides theoretical Three-Year-Old Championship Odds from Johnny Avello.
With the Haskell and the Jim Dandy complete, the first half of the summer horse racing season has come to a close. The race for the three-year-old championship is still wide open. Wins in the Travers Stakes and Breeders’ Cup Classic would certainly be enough to win the championship (and likely Horse of the Year) for any contender. That said, with their recent wins, Fierceness (Jim Dandy) and Dornoch (Haskell) appear to be the current division leaders based on their accomplishments so far.
In other recent news, Parenting kept his unbeaten record with a win (although not an easy one) against older horses. While he is still a possibility for the Travers, it seems more likely that he will next race somewhere else–potentially in the Pacific Classic on August 31 (against a much stronger field of older horses than the last race) or in the Grade II Pennsylvania Derby on September 21.
Looking ahead to the August 24 Travers, the field is shaping up to be even stronger than most years. In an announcement reminiscent of LeBron James’ “Decision”, Thorpedo Anna’s connections have indicated that she will be aimed at the Travers. No filly has won the Travers since 1915, and only one has even entered since 1979. That said, she’s been the most consistent winner among three-year-olds this year.
While most others haven’t made official announcements (and we won’t see official entries until the week of the race), among her potential foes are Belmont and Haskell winner Dornoch, Florida Derby and Jim Dandy winner Fierceness, unbeaten Unmatched Wisdom, Muth (idle since winning the Arkansas Derby) and Sierra Leone. If they all show up for the race, this year’s Travers could be one for the ages.
