MOREHEAD | The Morehead State soccer team welcomed its first “Power 6” opponent to the MSU Soccer Field since 2019 on Saturday, but the result did not go the Eagles’ way as Cincinnati came away with a victory in the final exhibition contest for both teams.
It was the fourth time in history the two teams squared off against each other with UC claiming all four wins. The Blue and Gold finished the preseason with a 1-1 record and ended the team’s streak of nine undefeated games at home.
Due to an agreement with both teams, the score and stats will not be published until a later date.
The Bearcats controlled the action for most of the afternoon, holding a significant advantage in both shots and corner kicks.
Morehead State surrendered a pair of goals in the first half and then allowed a handful more in the final 45 minutes.
Despite the setback, the Eagles had some bright moments. After just dressing 16 in Wednesday’s game, 20 players saw time on the pitch on Saturday and head coach Paul Cox found lots of positives in the team’s play. Hear his comments here.
Freshman Lilly Bailey got the start in the net and played the first 45 minutes. Freshman Claire Cress came in for the second half and completed the game. Bailey finished with five saves, while Cress recorded three.
MSU got off two shots, one by junior midfielder Kennedy Baquero and another by sophomore forward Hedda Ornberg.
Last year, the Blue and Gold finished their preseason with a 1-1 record, falling to Eastern Kentucky 1-0 and then defeating West Virginia State 4-0. Both games were at the MSU Soccer Field.
Morehead State will open the regular season at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15 at Marshall. The Eagles’ first official home game will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 25 against Detroit Mercy.
