Athletics: Emmanuel Wanyonyi runs fifth-fastest 800m ever to win gold
The first track final of the last evening of athletics action at the Stade de France is the men’s 800m.
Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati is the world leader this year and the favourite, but France have a real shot at a medal through Gabriel Tual. Watch too for Canada’s world champion Marco Arop and Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi.
It’s Wanyonyi who leads from Tual through the first lap as the stadium roars the latter on. USA’s Bryce Hoppel is also moving up the field as they take the bell.
300 to go and Tual attacks Wanyonyi as the crowd’s cheers and yells get louder. But Wanyonyi is sticking with him and at 200 to go makes his move!
The Kenyan is clear and Tual is also overtaken by Arop!
Arop might take Wanyonyi on the line? Not quite! Emmanuel Wanyonyi runs the fifth-fastest time ever, 1:41.19, for a new world lead to move him third all-time.
Arop silver in 1:41.20, a new Americas record for the Canadian.
And Sedjati came through for bronze in 1:41.50.
A U.S. national record for Hoppel in fourth, 1:41.67.
