Athletics: USA come close to world record to win women’s 4x400m relay gold
It’s time for the last stadium event of the athletics programme: the women’s 4x400m relay final.
Big cheers for Ireland and the Netherlands, as well as Great Britain and of course France.
Femke Bol anchors the Netherlands. Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone and Gabby Thomas run the second and third legs for the USA.
Off they go. A good start for the Dutch and USA. Jamaica have caught France on the stagger.
In they come for the first set of changeovers. USA lead as Shamier Little hands off to McLaughlin-Levrone, the women’s 400m hurdles champ and world record holder.
She is blitzing ahead of the field! Look at this advantage!
Jamaica and Ireland lead the chasers. But it’s about to get worse for them – we have 200m champ Thomas next for the US.

The USA come within a tenth of the world record that stands from 1988! 3:15.27 in a new Americas continental record.
Bol anchors the Dutch to silver in a national record 3:19.50.
Great Britain win bronze in 3:19.72, also a national record.
Ireland finish fourth. Over to the judges.
