Canada delivered a stunning upset to win the men’s 4x100m gold at Olympic Games Paris 2024, sending the baton across the line on Friday, 9 August in a time of 37.50 seconds.

Tokyo 2020 200m gold medallist Andre de Grasse anchored the foursome that also included Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney to victory.

South Africa finished shortly behind for the silver in an African record of 37.57s with Great Britain rounding out the podium clocking 37.61s.

Canada fired on all cylinders as they carried the baton around the purple track of Stade de France with the greatest of ease and fluent changeovers. Brown ran the first leg, with Blake taking over on the back straight before handing it over to Rodney, who clocked one of the fastest bends.

De Grasse had some work to do over the final metres of the anchor leg with South Africa’s Akani Simbine fast approaching.

The 29-year-old speedster burst over the line in first place for his seventh Olympic medal and Canada’s third straight podium in the 4x100m relays, adding to the silver from Tokyo 2020 and the bronze from Rio 2016. Canada adds to the gold they won in Atlanta 1996.

While Canada continued their remarkable relay run, the United States was left ruing missed opportunities after their quartet was disqualified due to a bungled first handoff.

The USA came into Paris 2024 as the team to beat after winning gold at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the world relays in Nassau earlier this year.
