14:25 Haydock – Theme Park
14:45 Ascot – Truthful
15:00 Haydock – Anmat
15:20 Ascot – Jarraaf

15:55 Ascot – Solomon / Going Remote (each-way)
16:30 Ascot – Tempus (each-way)
16:45 Haydock – Caernarfon (NAP)

A 5f sprint to kick us off on Shergar Cup day where Badri can strike early for the Rest of the World team. He’s had a few trainers recently but Michael Herrington has sweetened him up and he should go fairly well again.

This revolves around Irish challenger Samui, who is top-rated but may not get in as he’s outside the ratings band. I’m not adamant he’s ahead of his mark so am happy to take a chance on Sheradann regardless. He’s got good form in France but hasn’t set the world alight in the UK just yet. There were signs of promise at the Goodwood Festival and he can improve again. A tepid selection though.

Nigel Tinkler’s string started the season slowly but have hit their stride now. He was good when winning at York when heavily backed and with a little bit of luck at this Lancashire track, he can go in again.

Truthful has it to do on ratings but is better than the bare form suggests. Her last run in a handicap was 12 months ago where she finished second off a mark of 90. She’s 94 today and the horses she split last year are now rated much higher. She gave them plenty of weigh that day and this 1m 4f contest can bring out the best in her.

Owen Burrows’ former John Smiths Cup winner Anmat makes his first start since May 2023 but that absence might not be enough to stop him. The trainer has a high wins-to-runs strike rate so that gives us hope that he’ll be – at or near – his best. He’s a proper Grade One campaigner against lesser rivals in this and if 100 per cent fit, he looks the obvious pick.

Michael Appleby’s string are in great form and Daring Legend has his chance. But I fancy Jarraaf to stick his neck out and get the job done… see what I did there. He’s a former course and distance – when he won on handicap debut – and I’ve mentioned trainer Owen Burrows’ win-to-runs strike rate. Jarraaf has more to offer against his own age group.

Sean Levey rides the Ballydoyle raider and Lake Victoria will enhance her Newmarket 1,000 Guineas chance next season if she wins this. However, her pedigree suggests she could be more a sprinting type. She’ll have to be very good to beat Mountain Breeze though, who looks to have the best form on offer.

Solomon was an impressive winner last weekend and has a big chance. However, Jessica Harrington’s Going Remote could be an each-way player or  in the ‘without the favourite’ market. The 1m 4f trip should suit from a good draw in seven on better ground.

David O’Meara hasn’t the strongest record at the Shergar Cup – just one winner – but he has a few entries here. That puts me off his runners a little. Tempus makes each-way appeal even if it has been a while between runs for him. He’s dropping down the weights and was fourth off this mark of 96 last time. If he can be coaxed into the race, he has a big chance of hitting the frame at least.

Indelible will be many idea of the winner but Caernarfon looks a better bet to me. She won well at Pontefract two starts ago and ran well at the Curragh last time. She has to concede 3lbs to her rivals and the key to her is racing at 7f to a mile. She doesn’t stay much beyond the mile so this test will suit her ideally.
