Elite and MyWhoosh complete smart trainer verification process for UCI Cycling Esports World Championships

Representatives from MyWhoosh and the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) have completed testing and verification procedures at Elite’s headquarters in Italy for the 30 Elite Justo 2 trainers that will be used in competition for the finals of the 2024 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships.

The event, using Elite’s bike trainers, will take place on October 26 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

According to MyWhoosh… ‘The verification process marks a significant enhancement, setting a new standard in transparency and rigour. This approach aims to showcase the full verification procedure, ensuring alignment with the UCI expectations and maintaining equality of hardware among all competing athletes.

‘A UCI representative was present during the testing, ensuring adherence to the UCI standards. The presence of representatives from MyWhoosh, Elite, and UCI at Elite headquarters underscores the collaborative effort to uphold the highest standards of fairness in the hardware verification process.’

MyWhoosh adds that the future of cycling esports hinges on such standardised processes, ensuring all trainers operate equally under all conditions and incorporate anti-tamper technology.

The top-of-the-range Elite Justo 2 smart trainers underwent extensive testing with a minimum 1,000km break in test on the in-house Elite jigs. During this test the trainers were tested at a variety of wattages – from less than 100 to 1,000 – to validate the hardware and ensure each trainer is within tolerance limits.

Using data from top cycling esports athletes worldwide, the predicted power profiles at the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships were then replicated in the Elite Training Centre utilising custom software.

MyWhoosh noted that… ‘The trainers demonstrated highly consistent measurements regardless of the specified gender or weight class, ensuring that the trainers provide equitable functionality for both male and female athletes who will be competing in this event.’

All 30 trainers selected for the 2024 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships reportedly performed within 1% of power accuracy. Each of the trainers then received its official UCI verification sticker before being prepared for shipping to Abu Dhabi.

Matt Smithson, Race and Events Manager at MyWhoosh, said “This is a first for cycling esports and the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships. MyWhoosh, the UCI, and our partner Elite are committed to ensuring this event is equal, fair, and entertaining for everyone.

“Each trainer has its data sheet showing its ID, test results, and security tag numbers for the anti-tamper cables. These cables prevent any tampering with the device and will only be removed once on stage in Abu Dhabi.”

Marco Cavallin, Elite’s Sponsorship and Product Innovation Manager, said “For us at Elite, partnering with MyWhoosh and UCI for the 2024 UCI Cycling Esports World Championships is a source of great satisfaction and pride.

“It’s also an unparalleled opportunity to showcase our smart trainers’ technical features and accuracy. The Justo 2’s built-in power meter, combined with a data analysis and synthesis algorithm that we have refined over the years, allows us to ensure absolute accuracy and precision of data ahead of the live finals in Abu Dhabi on October 26.

“The testing protocol, agreed upon with UCI after a thorough analysis of the real conditions expected during the finals, has certified each trainer that will be used in Abu Dhabi. We’re excited to watch the top cycling esports athletes compete in this thrilling new format, featuring three distinct and engaging races!”

On October 26, 2024, at the fourth edition of the UCI Cycling Esports World Championships, 20 male and 20 female riders, along with up to four wildcard invitees, will compete for titles in Abu Dhabi. The virtual cycling championships will feature a multi-stage final on a newly designed virtual course by MyWhoosh.
