VESTAL, N.Y. – Emily Mackay’s success this summer has been celebrated by Binghamton University as well as her hometown area. The 2021 Bearcat alum grew up in nearby Endicott, N.Y. and has inspired the support from the entire Binghamton area – both on and off campus – during her road to the Paris Olympics.
On Thursday afternoon, the Binghamton Division of Athletics held a watch party at the University Union Building to cheer Mackay on during her 1,500 semifinal race on NBC. The watch party was open to the campus and local community and attracted the attention of all three local television outlets.
Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger, Director of Athletics Gene Marshall and numerous athletics and university staff members showed up for the event.
“Emily Mackay has truly inspired an outpouring of school spirit and pride from members of the Binghamton University community,” Stenger said. “She was the model of a student-athlete and she is a tremendous representative of Binghamton athletics, the University and our area. I’m glad that we have this opportunity to come together to watch the semifinal race and root for her.”
“I am extremely proud of Emily,” Marshall said. “She is a shining example of what Binghamton student-athletes are capable of doing, when provided the opportunity to compete. Whether it is academically, athletically, socially, professionally and life in general, our student-athletes succeed.”
Just 26 months ago, Mackay wrapped up her career at Binghamton. It was a career that included five USTFCCCA All-America honors and two COSIDA Academic All-America accolades. For Stenger, as well as many other people at the watch party, they have fond memories of Mackay’s time as a Bearcat.
“She was an outstanding runner during her time competing for the Bearcats and I was always thrilled to see her recognized for her efforts as a student as well,” Stenger said. “It was great to see her earning honors such as being named an America East Scholar-Athlete and a COSIDA Academic All-American.”
In the two years since she turned professional with New Balance Boston, Mackay has made a swift ascension to becoming one of the top women’s distance runners in the world. She was the bronze medalist in the women’s 1,500 at both the 2023 Pan Am Games and the 2024 World Indoor Championships.
The Olympic Games, however, represent the biggest competition of Mackay’s career. Prior to this summer, only four other Binghamton student-athletes have ever competed in the Olympics.
