Sport climbing round-up as Olympic and world records smashed
We’ve had a lot of great action at the Le Bourget Climbing Venue with the Olympic record being broken no less than seven times and the world record twice!
First though was the Boulder semi-final of the women’s Boulder & Lead, which saw defending world champion Janja Garnbret (SLO) achieve a massive score of 99.6 to huge cheers from an adoring crowd. She will attempt to add a Paris 2024 gold to the combined gold she won at Tokyo 2020 on 10 August.
Then came the men’s speed qualification (and qualification elimination), and this is where things really got spicy.
In the qualification seeding runs, the Olympic record was broken seven times, with Veddriq Leonardo (INA) eventually setting the record at 4.79 seconds.
That time didn’t stand for long, however, as Sam Watson (USA) would go even faster and set a new world record in the elimination heats – 4.75 – to the amazement of the crowd!
The full list of the Olympic record change from today’s men’s speed climbing is as follows:
Sam Watson (USA) – 4.75 WR, OR
Veddriq Leonardo (INA) – 4.79
Amir Maimuratov (KAZ) – 4.89
Sam Watson – 4.91
Veddriq Leonardo – 4.92
Wu Peng (CHN) – 5.07
Rahmad Adi Mulyono (INA) – 5.07
