Cycling star Ellesse Andrews makes Paris velodrome debut

15

Sprint star Ellesse Andrews will make her first appearance at the Paris Olympics, as the track cycling programme kicks off at Saint Quentin en Yvelines Velodrome.

Since her keirin silver at Tokyo three years ago, Andrews has emerged as one of the world’s top speedsters and tonight spearheads the NZ sprint team, alongside Rebecca Petch and Shaane Fulton. Her best medal chances will again be the keirin, where she is reigning world champion.

The men’s team pursuit of Aaron Gate, Campbell Stewart, Tom Sexton and Keegan Hornblow also face qualifying rounds — they finished third at last year’s world championships, behind Denmark and Italy.

Slalom kayakers Luuka Jones and Finn Butcher have made promising starts to their kayak cross events, and will contest knockout rounds at Vaires sur Marne Nautical Stadium, culminating in finals tomorrow morning.

Our triathletes compete in the mixed team relay, with men’s individual silver medallist Hayden Wilde anchoring a foursome that may challenge for the podium.

At Stade de France, pole vaulters Eliza McCartney, Olivia McTaggart and Imogen Ayris face qualifying, while discus thrower Connor Bell and steeplechaser George Beamish also making their first appearances.
