Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton has hinted at an unexpected possible future for his career: the Olympics. In a recent interview with CNN, the British driver, who has dominated the F1 scene by clinching six of his seven drivers’ championships in seven years from 2014 to 2020, has revealed that he would be interested in taking part in a different kind of sporting arena.
He explained:
“Not for motorsport,” he said, addressing the potential of winning an Olympic medal.
“But I don’t know, maybe I’ll do an Olympic sport someday.”
While Hamilton is mainly known for his staggering success in Formula 1, matched only by the legendary Michael Schumacher, he has also seen a huge amount of success outside the motorsport arena. Some of his other ventures have included his vegan restaurant chain Neat Burger as well as various projects within fashion, the drinks industry, and charitable causes aimed at increasing inclusivity and diversity in motorsports.

Another passion for the Mercedes driver is surfing. Speaking about one of his scariest moments whilst surfing during an appearance on popular YouTube series Hot Ones, Hamilton recounted:
“Biggest wipeout I had I was with Kelly Slater, on Pipeline. It was like 20ft waves [at Pipeline] and Kelly was like ‘there’s no way you’re coming out there. You’re crazy.’
“I turn around and see this set of four waves coming and that for me was like: ‘it’s over, it’s all over.’ As I threw my board, I dove down and grabbed the reef and I could hear this wave crash behind me.
“My board got ripped and snapped in half. I came back up, obviously gasping for air and the next one was coming so back down, grabbed the reef again as another wave comes over. So I did that three times. I got up, I’d nearly run out of air. I’d nearly drowned, but managed to swim back from there.”
Hamilton is currently competing in his last Formula 1 season with Mercedes, a team he has been a part of since 2013, before he moves to Ferrari on a multi-year contract from the 2025 season. The seven-time champion is in sixth position in the Drivers’ Standings before the summer break ahead of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez and behind Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz.
Mercedes is in fourth position in the Constructors’ Standings with 266 points. Leading the Constructors’ Championship after the first 14 races of the season is Red Bull with 408 points followed by McLaren with 366 and Ferrari with 345 points.
