Jack Lisowski fails to qualify for hometown event

Jack Lisowski won’t have an opportunity to compete in Cheltenham this season after losing in the British Open qualifiers on Wednesday.

The Cheltenham cueist would have been hoping to use the local support at the Centaur to help boost his chances of securing a maiden ranking title.

But Lisowski produced a disappointing performance in his round-of-128 fixture at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester and lost 4-2 to David Grace.

The 33 year-old had a poor second half to the 2023/24 campaign that saw him drop out of the top 16 in the world rankings.

Although he managed to successfully emerge from his qualifying fixtures for the Xi’an Grand Prix and the Wuhan Open, Lisowski won’t be featuring at the venue stages of the British Open.

Grace, who had lost both of his recent preliminary-round matches and was in need of a stronger display, compiled breaks of 101, 58, and 54.

Elsewhere, Si Jiahui and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh moved through in the competition with respective defeats of David Lilley and Alexander Ursenbacher.

Noppon Saengkham, who will be looking to break into the top 16 for the first time in his career this season, edged Joe Perry in a deciding frame.

The Thai, a finalist in last season’s Scottish Open, contributed a brace of century breaks before clinching a close last frame.

Michael Holt secured only his second victory since returning to the World Snooker Tour as a professional, meanwhile.

The former Shoot Out champion, who dominated last season’s amateur Q Tour, easily dismantled Reanne Evans’ challenge with a 4-0 scoreline.

Mark Davis, Martin O’Donnell, and Jamie Clarke also progressed with one-sided victories.

Among the others to make it through to the last 64 were Ma Hailong, Allan Taylor, Liam Graham, and amateur top-up Iulian Boiko.

The British Open qualifiers continue on Thursday with Stephen Maguire, Hossein Vafaei, and Jimmy White representing a few of the higher-profile names in action.

The top 16 seeds have all had their initial clashes in the ranking tournament held over to the venue stages in September.
