Emma Navarro wasted no time representing THE University of Virginia and THE United States of America well once play began at Roland-Garros Stadium. A match that was set to start around 6:00 AM Eastern Time on Saturday didn’t begin until 1:04 PM on Sunday due to rain delays on Saturday, which led to the match being postponed until today.
The former Virginia Cavalier was clearly eager to showcase her talent because she made quick work of her opponent, Julia Grabher. Both sets of the match lasted only 31 minutes, and the match lasted slightly over an hour. Emma Navarro breezed through the first set 6-2 and proceeded to skunk the Austrian in the second set 6-0.
A couple of weeks ago, Emma reached the Quarterfinals at Wimbledon and is now the 15th-ranked player in the country and the #11 seed in the Olympics Women’s Singles bracket. She is looking to continue the solid year she has had on the court in Paris.
Navarro is having her best year yet as a pro. Her finish at Wimbledon, combined with some trips to the semifinals in non-Grand Slam events and earning her first-ever singles title at the Hobart International Tournament in January, has led to her doubling her prize money from 2023 and earning more in 2024 than she has in her five other professional years.
Former Cavaliers getting paid in 2024 seems to be a theme here, and I have no complaints about it.
Emma played an all-around solid match, winning 65% of the points, collecting 14 service winners, and making only two double faults and 15 unforced errors (Grabher had 3 double faults and 34 unforced errors).
Next Up:
Emma will play Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria in the Second Round of the Women’s Singles on Monday, July 29th, at 9:00 AM (ET).
