PARIS (WOOD) — Team USA women’s rugby sevens hasn’t won a medal in 100 years, but one Caledonia woman is hoping to change that.
Alena Olsen helped the U.S. win its first two games of the Olympics, beating Japan and Brazil handily. Olsen’s parents, Marissa and Olie, are in Paris to support her. However, they’re not drowning in red, white and blue. The Olsen family wore bee antennae. Olie even wore a full bee costume.
“They’re making a really beautiful homage to how much I care about the environment and climate action,” Alena said. “What’s actually so crazy is (the team) huddled once we went on the field and there was a bee sitting (on my collar).”
Caledonia native not ‘too sweet to play rugby’
Marissa and Olie are happy to support their daughter in a personal way on the world’s biggest stage.
“My heart just kind of shivers or goes so wild,” Marissa said. “I can’t even talk sometimes … so many emotions into one.”
Olie wore his bee antennae over his Team USA hat.
“I’m totally ecstatic,” Olie said. “This is a wonderful moment. What more could we say? This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment.”
The U.S. women’s rugby sevens team continues its journey to a medal Monday against host France.
