LAS CRUCES, N.M. – As the summer rolls on, the Aggies prepare for the upcoming track and field season under the direction of fourth-year head coach, Joseph Rath. On Friday afternoon, Rath announced the hiring of Patrick Larrison as the new throws coach for the Crimson & White.
“Coach Larrison has known from an early age that he wanted to be a coach. He has a keen eye for technical adjustments and makes very well-thought-out training decisions. His passion, intelligence, and grit will greatly benefit our track and field program as he continues to build upon a throws event group that has experienced a lot of success. We are very excited for the future he will bring about!” said Head Coach Joseph Rath.
“I’m excited to step into this role with a commitment to developing champions on and off the field, with a foundation built on respect and hard work,” Coach Larrison noted.
Larrison joins NM State full-time after serving as a volunteer consultant for the Big 12’s Kansas Jayhawks, working under former NM State head coach and current Jayhawk throws coach, Doug Reynolds. The Jayhawk men recently finished 10th at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, including a third-place finish in the discus.
Working as a private throws coach since 2019, the University of Kansas graduate has coached multiple top-20 athletes, while also creating customized training programs, conducting video analysis and mentoring student-athletes with mental preparation strategies.
As an athlete, Larrison spent four seasons with the Kansas Jayhawks, earning a Big 12 indoor championship in 2023. At the 2023 Big XII Indoor Championships, Larrison recorded a personal best distance of 19.90m (65-3.50″) in the shot put. The newest Aggie assistant coach also earned a pair of Second Team All-American honors during his time in Lawrence, Kansas.
Hailing from Moore, Okla., Larrison earned Oklahoma Gatorade Player of the Year honors in 2018 after collecting his third straight discus state title. In total, Larrison collected eight State championships before committing to the University of Kansas.
