PITTSBURGH – Head football coach Jerry Schmitt has announced the addition of three new coaches, Garrett Mack, Da’Quaun Jamison and Derik Abbott, to the Duquesne staff for the 2024 season. Mack will lead the defensive line, Jamison will oversee the defensive backs and Abbott will serve as offensive assistant/pass game specialist.

“We are thrilled to welcome Garrett, Da’Quaun and Derik to our team,” said Schmitt. “Their experience and passion for the game will be instrumental in our pursuit of championships and will elevate our program on and off the field.”

Mack joins the DU defensive staff after the closing of Notre Dame College (OH) in Cleveland. Mack was head coach for two seasons at the perennial Division II powerhouse after serving as an assistant for two years prior, holding titles of Run Game Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach and Recruiting Coordinator along the way. In his first season as head coach of the Falcons, they won the Mountain East Conference title and advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs finishing with a 9-3 (9-1 MEC) record.

“A proven winner, Garrett will be a tremendous asset to our football team,” said Schmitt. “His defense always ranked among the best in the country at Notre Dame and I am confident that he will bring that same winning mindset as a member of our staff.”

Mack’s 2022 defensive unit at Notre Dame led Division II with six defensive touchdowns and held opponents to an 86.73 passing efficiency. Mack coached 30 Falcons to All-MEC honors in two seasons as head coach, saw six get named all-region and had 10 Academic All-District honorees with one Academic All-American. Prior to NDC, Mack was a linebackers coach at Oberlin College (2017, ’19) and served as wide receivers/strength and conditioning coach at his alma mater Baldwin Wallace (2018).

Jamison was an all-conference safety at Central Michigan University, where he lettered all four years (2015-19) and recorded 143 tackles, 9.0 tackles-for-loss, two forced fumbles, three interceptions and 18 pass breakups. A native of Leesburg, Ga., Jamison comes to Duquesne after serving as a defensive graduate assistant at his alma mater Central Michigan in 2023.

“Between his playing and coaching experience, DQ will be an exceptional leader of our defensive backs,” said Coach Schmitt. “He is a bright, young mind, and I look forward to seeing him continue to grow with the Dukes.”

Jamison also served as a member of CMU’s Athletics’ Leadership Academy Directors Table from 2018-19 and graduated with a degree in communications. Jamison began his coaching career in 2022 as the safeties/nickelbacks coach and special teams coordinator at NCAA Division II Albany State University. The Golden Rams posted a 7-2 record and had two defensive backs earn all-conference honors during the 2022 campaign.

Abbott arrives on the Bluff after spending last season as an offensive graduate assistant at Pitt. A 2016 graduate of nearby Robert Morris University, Abbott brings six years of coaching experience from multiple NCAA levels, as well as a 2022 coaching fellowship with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.

“Derik will be a great addition to our offensive staff,” said Schmitt. “With his coaching experience across multiple levels and NEC playing experience, I am excited to see him get to work as a member of our team.”

Abbott played one graduate season at Lindenwood University then began his coaching career as an offensive quality control coach and assistant quarterback coach in 2018. The Orlando native coached four seasons at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy at the Division III level from 2019-22 as a quarterbacks coach and worked with the passing game, where he helped produce the 2022 conference rookie of the year at wide receiver. The Titans’ coaching fellowship was during the 2022 training camp, serving as an assistant to the quarterbacks.

The defending NEC champion Duquesne Dukes, led by 20th year head coach Jerry Schmitt, will open their 2024 campaign at Toledo on Thursday, August 29. The home opener is scheduled for September 21 versus West Virginia Wesleyan and conference play begins on October 5 (Homecoming & Family Weekend) at Rooney Field against LIU.
