CINCINNATI (WXIX) – Members from the Journey of Hope Transamerica cycling team stopping in Cincinnati on Saturday.
The cycling team is going coast to coast raising money and awareness for people with disabilities.
Zach Brown works with The Ability Experience and is a crew member on the cycling team.
“Just spreading the message that people with all abilities are just like us and that they can have just as big of an impact on us as we can them,” he says.
Brown says 20 Pi Kappa Phi fraternity members from around the country and six crew members are making the cross-country trip, which started in Seattle on June 2. The Ability Experience is the fraternity’s national philanthropy.
“None of us knew each other before the trip. we’re all new. I just graduated from Auburn, he graduated from Purdue, we have guys from all across the country and we’re all coming together for a similar cause and accomplish something together,” Brown said.
Samuel Bernicke is from Cincinnati and he is a cyclist on the team. He says at each stop, they give grants to local organizations supporting people with disabilities and spend time with the people the organization supports.
“We call them friendship visits and we just hang out with people with disabilities. We had a water balloon fight at one time, we painted. We have a lot of fun,” Bernicke says.
Brown says they’ve raised S400,000 so far and hope to raise more by the time they hit Washington, DC on August 10.
He says every community they visit has different needs for the cyclists.
“Some communities have larger facilities and operations for people with disabilities,” Brown explains. “Sometimes we have two in a day and we’re going to different ones, and people are impacting us, and we’re impacting them. Sometimes it’s a retirement community and that’s what they have and we’re there and we want to connect with anybody.”
Cyclists are in Cincinnati until Monday, then they travel to Lexington. From there, they will keep going until August 10 when they reach DC.
