On day two of the national juvenile track and field Doireann Haughney (Brow Rangers),Matias Quiglea (KCH), Chloe Lynch (Gowran), Evan Walsh (St Joesphs) and Aisling Phelan (KCH) were crowned national champions.

Haughney won the girls u16 Hammer with a throw of 41.75, a new personal best.

In the girls u15 100m it was a Kilkenny one-two as Aisling Phelan (KCH) won from clubmate Ellen Daly.

Matias Quiglea powered down the final 40m to take gold in the boys u-16 100m.

Chloe Lynch (Gowran) took the gold in the girls u18 pole vault – an event which has grown in numbers over the past few years.

Evan Walsh won the boys u17 walk just a day after he won silver in the SIAB games in Wales.

On the final day of the u18 European Championships Pia Langton finished eight in the final of the ladies 800m, marking the final day of a three-day back-to-back races in which she set a new personal best of 2.07.90 in the semi-final.

There were three further athletes on international duty.

Doireann Haughney (Brow Rangers) winner of the u16 Hammer

At the SIAB international in Wales, Evan Walsh finished second in the walk with a new PB of 14.14 and Kate Maher and Matias Quiglia (KCH) secured bronze medals as part of their respective relays.

Mary Fitzgerald (Gowran) has been selected for the Para Olympics in Paris.

Fitzgerald achieved the qualifying standard for the shot putt back in February but was only formallymselected during the week.

Kilkenny City Harriers won two gold and one silver at the national relays last Saturday.

European u18 Championships

It has been an exciting few day in Slovakia for the European u18 Championships.

Three bronze medals and that magnificent gold by Thomas Williams in the hammer sealed what has been one of the most successful championships for Team Ireland.

Two Kilkenny girls were in action over the course of the four-day championships.

Pia Langton (KCH) in the 800m and Molly Daly (KCH) in the 200m.

Langton finished second in her heat on Friday last, looking very much at ease as she did just enough to make that automatic qualifying spot.

There was a lot more at stage on Saturday as she raced in the third 800m semi-final.

Going into that third semi-final Langton knew she would either have to finish in the top two or run a personal best.

Langton ran a superb race, staying close to the top two and while a gap did open up, she tracked them all the way to the line to finish 3rd run a new personal best of 2.07.9, taking the fastest non-automatic spot and a place in the final.

She finished eight in the final.

Langton fought hard all the way but the personal best she needed to run in the semi-final took its toll on her “the legs just weren’t there today after three races” she said.

Chloe Lynch (Gowran) winner of the u18 Pole Vault

Molly Daly, with one year to go at the u18 age group qualified for the 200m semi-final and finished seventh running a time of 24.81.

Molly will still be eligible for the European Youths next year which is also u18.

SIAB International

Three Kilkenny athletes took part in the SIAB international which was hosted by Welsh Athletics in Carmarthen, Wales.

First up was Evan Walsh (St Josephs AC).

Competing in his second international for Ireland, Walsh came into this competition through a tough channel.

Sidelined from the All-Ireland schools with an emergency appendix operation, he bounced back three weeks later to finish third in the Tailteann Games and qualify for the SIABs.

Back training as normal again Walsh finished second behind fellow Irishman John Glennon in a new personal best of 14.14 for the 3000m walk.

Kate Maher (KCH) finished second in the 200m at the Tailteann Games and earned her spot in the SIABs 200m and 4x100m relay.

Maher was up against Welsh sprinting sensation Aliyah Afolabi who was the eventual winner in 24.43, a time that would have earned her a spot on the Irish team for the u18 Europeans.

Finishing 7th in a time of 25.82 Maher can be well pleased with her performance.

As part of the Irish 4x100m along with Angela Cielecka, Chidinma Adikaibe and Tiffany Nwaedozie, Kate earned a bronze medal for their third place finish behind Scotland and England.

Also competing in relay was Matias Quiglea (KCH).

Quiglea finished outside of the medals in both the 100m and 200m at the recent Tailteann Games but was selected for both the 4x100m and 4x300m relay.

Emma Walsh 4th u-14 walk, Evan Walsh 1st u-17 walk, Amy Walsh 2nd u-15 walk. All St Josephs AC

The 4x100m team of Quaglia, Russell Veikune, Joshua Awujoola and Dubem Amah also took bronze with Wales winning gold from England.

There was further bronze for Quiglea when team team also secured bronze.

All-Ireland Juveniles

A total of five gold, five silver and one bronze medal were accumulated at the National Juvenile Track and Field Championships last weekend.

In an action packed but long day of competition that finished after 7pm, six championship records tumbled with numerous personal best performances.

For Kilkenny our five gold medallists were: Doireann Haughney (Brow Rangers), Matias Quiglea (KCH), Chloe Lynch (Gowran), Evan Walsh (St Joesphs) and Aisling Phelan (KCH) are crowned national champions.

Haughney won the girls u16 Hammer with a throw of 41.75 from her fifth round.

This marks a new personal best for the Brow Rangers athlete.

She fouled the first throw and went straight into second on the back of her second-round throw.

It was on the third-round throw that she overtook Emily Stapleton (Borrisokane) to remain in the lead to the end.

In the girls u15 100m it was a Kilkenny one-two as Aisling Phelan (KCH) won from clubmate Ellen Daly.

With ten meters to go it was Daly who was marginally ahead.

A powerful surge to the line propelled Phelan from third to first, demonstrating the importance of every meter in a 100m race.
Matias Quiglea powered down the final 40m to take gold in the boys u16 100m.

With just over halfway gone in the 100m, Quiglea was not in medal contention.

The powerful Kilkenny City Harrier had work to do.

Sandwiched between Finn McClean (Regent House) and Harry McIlwaine (Letterkenny), Quiglea pushed through from the 40m line but only peeped to the front with about five meters to go.

Ailsing Phelan and Ellen Daly

Chloe Lynch (Gowran) took the gold in the girls u18 pole vault – an event which has grown in numbers over the past few years as the Irish pole vaulters improve in heights each year.

Lynch who has a best of 3.40 from the Manchester Vaulting competition a few weeks ago narrowly missed 3.15 on her second attempt.

A shower of rain on her third attempt did not help the situation and she had to settle on 3.00m, being her winning effort.

She finished half a meter ahead of her nearest opponent.

Evan Walsh (St Josephs) won the boys u17 walk just a day after he won silver in the SIAB games in Wales.

Doing two 3000m walks back-to-back is no mean feat.

On top of that flight delays and a 3.30am arrival home and you can appreciate what it took to achieve his win last Sunday.

Walsh finished the race in a time of 14.44 to win comfortably.

His sister Amy produced a good cautious effort in the girls u15 to finish second in a time of 10.29.

The judging was pretty harsh and the athletes had to watch their step.

Younger sister Emma finished fourth in the u14 event.

An event where history was made.

Three athletes from the same club made a clean sweep, the first time since records began in 1895 any club has achieved this feat.

Lily Ryan (St Josephs) finished third in a stacked u17 walk, making this medal number three for St Joseph’s AC.

Brow Rangers secured a second medal when Robert Patterson took silver in the u15 hammer.

With the hammer hitting the cage on his first two throws Patterson had no choice but to throw cautiously in the third round.

Another hit of the cage in the fourth round saw the Brow Rangers youngest get worried.

A quick word from coach Joe Kelly put that straight, with Patterson moving into second on his fifth-round throw.

It was from his final throw that he secured his best effort of 41.52.

Alex Cullen (KCH) was up against Sean Doggett (Athenry) in the 400m flat.

Doggett has already achieved the qualifying standard for the World Juniors in Peru next month.

Cullen knew the opposition was going to be tough.

Coming off the bend it was Doggett with a commanding lead.

Antoine Roquette (DSD) held the second spot.

A rapid final 50m by Cullen saw this change as Cullen eclipsed the Dubliner crossing the line half a second ahead.

Kate Maher (KCH), Matias Quiglea (KCH) and Evan Walsh (St Josephs) representing Ireland.

There was some good running over the 3000m by Kilkenny athletes.

In the girls u18 the St Senans pair of Eve Dunphy and Charlotte Carpendale stayed in contention with the leading group.

With 600m to go, the pace changed, and it was Dunphy who was left fighting for a bronze medal with two other athletes.

Dunphy finished 5th in a new personal best with Carpendale finishing in 8th .

Ruairi McEvoy (KCH) competed in the boys u19 race and finished 8th.

Caoimhe Phelan (St Senans) was also eight in the u19 girls.

All-Ireland Relays and B Championships

While we are all basking in the jubilation of our u18 European and SIAB performing athletes there were some magnificent performances to dwell on from those competing in the All-Ireland Relays and B Championships.

KCH as usual were at home with the relays and brought home three medals, two gold and one silver.

Their u15 team being unlucky as a baton infringement caused them disqualification.

In their final year of competition, the girls u19 team pulled out all stops with the 4x400m team taking gold and the 4×100 taking silver.

The girls u14 4x100m took the relay world by storm as they secured the gold medal over Crookstown-Millview whom they had beaten in the heats.

There were two golds from the B championships. Ellen Cormack (KCH) took top honours with a very decisive victory in the u15 800m.

While Odhran Prendergast (Gowran) won the u16 Long Jump.

Cormack had narrowly missed out on qualification for the All Irelands and was thus rewarded with a B All-Ireland victory.

Something that will no doubt give her confidence to push ahead more in further competitions.

Prendergast has always shown talent from a young age in hurdles and jumps, got his just reward as he leaped 5.40m to win the u16 Long Jump.

Further medals came from Willow O’Neill Maher (KCH) in the girls u13 shot, where she secured 3rd place and Sean O’Farrell (KCH) who was 3rd in the boys u15 100m.

National Silver for Ger Forde
Ger Forde (KCH) took the runner-up medal at the national 10-mile race in the Phoenix Park last weekend.

Over 1,700 runners took part in the race with almost 600 of them taking part in the national ten-mile race which was incorporated into it.

The race was won by Keelin Kilrehil (Moy Valley) in 49.56 with Forde taking silver in 51.11 was Lauren Dearmody (Castlecomer) was the first Kilkenny female home with a fourth place finish.
