TENNIS ANYONE? | Two businesswomen have ‘Shaked’ up Abingdon with ‘couture’ sweets

ABINGDON, Va. — Combine two ladies running separate retail businesses on Abingdon’s Main Street.

Stir in imaginative recipes called “Virginia is for Lovers” and “Campfire by the Creeper.”

Mix well at a location long known for serving sweet treats.

Result: You have the recipe for Shaked!

This dessert shop has survived its infant year since opening on May 1, 2023.

Now, the owners are excited to welcome guests during the Virginia Highlands Festival and help support a Clint Black concert coming to the Moonlite Theatre in Abingdon along Lee Highway on Aug. 3.

“We do bakes and couture milkshakes,” said co-owner Cassie Rowe, the proprietor of the Abingdon Gifting Company for seven years.

Some have cherries. Some have chocolate. Some have s’mores.

“We call them couture milkshakes because the word, by definition, means anything that’s designed,” said Rowe, who grew up at Meadowview and graduated from Patrick Henry High School in 2010.

She smiled and added, “We put a lot of effort into our designs — and lots of love.”

Many sweet tooth fanatics come from as far as Kingsport, Tennessee, and Marion, Virginia, to sample shakes, Rowe said.

“We feel like, on Main Street, we are a stand-alone operation,” Rowe said. “Even though parking is tough, we do get a lot of visitors who come solely for us.”

Co-owner Kitzi Manuel, a 2001 graduate of Holton High School, operates Love & Light Specialty Boutique, which recently transitioned into the Emporium of Abingdon.

In their other businesses, Manuel and Rowe are next-door neighbors on Abingdon’s Main Street.

Turns out, Rowe had wanted to open a bakery while Manuel dreamed of running an ice-cream shop.

Today, the pair finish each other’s sentences as they work in tandem on treats.

“I grew up in restaurants,” Manuel said.

“My parents owned and operated several restaurants. My mom was a baker. She was so much into desserts, just in general,” Manuel said.

“I like baking, but ice cream is just fun,” Manuel said. “And we get excited to see people just literally run to get their ice cream, especially the big shakes — the couture shakes. They just love those.”
