It’s been widely described on social media as a “wholesome moment”, as Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s fan, New Zealand professional rugby sevens player Michaela Blyde, finally met the Jamaican track star on Friday.
In fact, Blyde described Fraser-Pryce as her “idol”.
After going into full “fan girl” mode when she spotted the Jamaican triple Olympic champion and 10-time world champion in Paris ahead of the official start of the Olympic Games, Blyde’s TikTok post, which captured the moment, went viral on social media.
On Friday, Blyde uploaded another video to TikTok showing various snippets of the lead-up to meeting Fraser-Pryce, which included the Jamaican following the New Zealand native on Instagram.
Even Blyde’s teammates joined in on the mission to meet the Jamaican by helping her craft a message to the co-captain of Jamaica’s team to the Olympic Games Paris 2024 on Instagram.
Finally, it happened!
@michaelablyde Na stop. I just met my idol. The QUEEN of sprinting 👑 in bare feet, a stained shirt and oversized pants. My family would be so proud. #olympics2024#paris2024#jamaica#trackandfield#shellyannfraserpryce♬ original sound – Michaela Blyde
Blyde ran barefooted to hug a smiling Fraser-Pryce in a section of the athletes village in Paris.
The New Zealander captioned the video:
Na stop. I just met my idol – the QUEEN of sprinting.
Blyde pointed out in the caption that she was also in a stained shirt and oversized pants for the occasion.
“My family would he so proud,” she said, adding the hashtags #olympics2024 #paris2024 #jamaica #trackandfield #shellyannfraserpryce.
The video has been shared widely on social media, with positive comments accompanying it.
“Girl you made it to the news in Jamaica,” said a woman on Blyde’s TikTok account.
“Mi a bawl like a me a meet Shelly,” added another.
“What a wholesome moment. Awww. Olympics not even start good and this is my moment so far,” a TikToker wrote.
“As a Jamaican, I approve this reaction,” a woman said.
Commented another TikTok user: “This was the quickest turn around for a part 2… luv this… athletes meeting athletes. And all are legendary.”
As a professional rugby sevens player, Blyde became the first female to win back-to-back World Rugby Sevens Player of the Year titles and was part of the Olympic gold medal-winning side at the Tokyo Games in 2020.
