We weren’t sure if things would get underway in Tahiti for the Olympic surfing competition at Teahupo’o.

But the conditions have been good today and the action started at 7am local time with ideal offshore winds.

First in action was Australia’s Ethan Ewing, who was up against South Africa’s Jordy Smith and Germany’s Tim Elter.

Ewing produced the best wave of the heat, getting a 7.33 score for a total of 9.90, ahead of 7.60 for Smith and 4.00 for Elter. He goes through to round three, while the other two will compete in round two.

Next up is another Aussie, Jack Robinson, who had an injury scare the other day when he cut his foot during a warm-up surf.

He is up against France’s Joan Duru and South African Matthew McGillivray.

Winners from the first round head directly to round three, while the losers will face sudden death in the second round.

Tahiti is hosting the surfing because Teahupo’o is one of the world’s best waves and beaches in France are mostly flat at this time of the year.

Rough weather and bad winds next week are likely to delay competition for a few days but only four days are required to complete the competition, which can run until August 5.
