Portia Woodman-Wickliffe vs USA World Rugby Sevens

After being held at both the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and Tokyo’s delayed 2021 Games, rugby sevens is back with a bang at Paris 2024 as the best men’s and women’s sides in the sport’s high-octane shortened version head to the Stade de France ahead of this year’s eight-day competition.

Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will feature 12 teams, and 16 nations overall are represented with half of those fielding teams in both editions of the sevens at Paris 2024. Brazil, Canada, China, and most surprisingly of all Great Britain will all be having their sevens flags flown exclusively by their women’s teams.

The USA Eagles team come into the women’s sevens in 2024 as one of the teams most hotly-tipped to take home the gold medal, having massively punched above their weight to qualify via the World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series over the course of the last two years. Australia and New Zealand, who took gold in 2016 and 2020 respectively, are undoubtedly the teams to beat.

Hosts France and near-neighbours Great Britain both finished in the top four at the Tokyo Games, with Les Bleus winning the silver medal following a loss to New Zealand in the final, but Great Britain arguably have the most to prove having finished fourth in both 2016 and 2020. Fiji took bronze in Tokyo, but unlike their world-famous men’s team, the Fijiana failed to qualify this time around.

There’s still plenty to get excited for ahead of the women’s rugby sevens tournament at the 2024 Olympics, and The Sporting News has all the details you’ll need to ensure you don’t miss a second of the action.
