Team USA has dominated international swimming for so long that it has become almost a given to see the Americans atop the medal table — by a comfortable margin — at the end of an Olympic swim meet. But that dominance no longer can be taken for granted. Team USA barely topped Australia in Tokyo in 2021, earning 30 overall medals and 11 golds to the Aussies’ 21 and nine. Then, at the 2023 world championships, Australia out-gold-medaled Team USA by a 13-7 margin.
