STEVENS POINT, Wis. (WSAW) – Under a variety of different names, the Mark Zelich Golf Classic has been swinging since the early 60′s. Over 60 years in, the local golf phenomenon returns this weekend.
It’ll be a bitter-sweet weekend, as Zelich passed away in October 2023. The first classic without him around will certainly have a different feel, but there’s almost no better way to honor a legend.
“Losing Mark was a huge loss to the community and just the world,” says Mark Zelich Golf Classic Director Nic Babl. “We just really wanna keep this event going in his honor because he was such a great man. So great of him to start a golf tournament in this area, and everything we do is our of respect for him.”
The tournament brings in the best golfers across Central Wisconsin, ages 16-80, into one setting. Zelich passed away at the age of 95. He may no longer be with us, but a certain phrase of his is a perfect way to remember him on the course.
“Courage,” says Babl. “Just to remember Mark, to remember that we’re here to enjoy ourselves and enjoy each other in the social events to bring each other together. In the spirit of also competition, it’s just all about caring for each other.”
Zelich would end every broadcast with the word “Courage.” The tournament trophy will even switch it’s name from the “Team Cup” to the “Courage Cup” to honor Zelich.
The Golf Classic will be held at the Stevens point Country Club between the weekend of July 26th-27th. For more info on this year’s Golf Classic, click here.
