SNOOKER legend Stephen Hendry has revealed he wanted one last shot at the World Championship.

But the seven-time Crucible King has no regrets on calling time on his illustrious career after a frustrating comeback that failed to ignite.

Hendry’s performances last season were not up to his usual standard

Hendry shocked the snooker world when he came out of retirement in 2020 after an eight-year break.

But the green-baize great struggled to reproduce the magical form which saw him pocket a staggering 36 ranking titles during an illustrious career.

“I would have liked to have had the option to just even play in the World Championship, but unfortunately the rules don’t allow it,” revealed Hendry.

“I would have like to have had a tour card this year.

“There’s obviously been a lot of talk to whether me and Ken (Doherty) deserve wildcards, but I won’t go into that.

“But ultimately I’m doing a lot of stuff in China that involves live-streaming, and the rules dictate you can’t play in some tournaments while that is going on.

“I’m so busy with my YouTube channel and obviously TV work, that’s my priority.

“There’s eight tournaments a season for my TV work, plus I’ll be coming over to China three or four months a year.

“There’s just really no point (in me trying to play).”

Hendry won the first of his world titles in 1990 and famously won five Crucible crowns in a row up from 1992-1997, before winning his last world title in 1999.

Stephen Hendry left stunned as snooker rival reveals he’s copying his iconic hairstyle – ‘it’s coming back!’

Bu the 55-year-old, rarely won a match in the few seasons on his return.

And he joked: “The less said about my performances last season the better!

“The worse thing about it (my poor form) is that I want to hurt myself when I’m playing snooker these day. And that’s never a good feeling to have.

“(It’s going to be tough) unless you’re going to put the work in – and that’s something I didn’t even do to give myself a chance.

“But, you know, we move on and do other things.”
