HICKORY, NC – Transfer Ziare Wells has signed to play basketball at Lenoir-Rhyne, as announced by head coach Brent Owen on Tuesday.
“Ziare is an athletic wing with really good length at 6’6″ who will be able to defend anyone. He can knock down a three or dunk on you in transition,” said Owen. “He has a great skillset for his size, and even played point guard at times for his junior college program. What impressed me throughout the recruiting process was that he was not as concerned with himself as he was with our team’s ability to win. Ziare wants to win above all else, and that will be great for our culture.”
Wells spent the last two seasons as a key player at Monroe Community College in New York City, New York. In his two years with the Mustangs, Wells played in 64 games, starting 29 of them. After a strong freshman year, he broke out as a go-to guy for Monroe, averaging 13.4 ppg on 47% from the field. He led the Mustangs in total points (402), rebounds (207), and field goals made (159). On the defensive side of the ball, Wells recorded 37 steals and added nine blocks.
Wells knows what it is like to be part of a winning culture, as in his two years at Monroe Community College the Mustangs went a combined 52-13, taking home the NJCAA Division I East District Tournament Championship and advancing to the second round of the NJCAA Tournament during his freshman season.
