In a remarkable milestone, the Sketty Club in Swansea is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.
Established in 1924, this snooker and social club has been a cornerstone of the Sketty community, providing a welcoming space for men in the area for a century. The Sketty Club, boasting around 150 members, is renowned for its two full-size snooker tables and an active snooker team that competes in the Swansea League.
The club has been a second home to many local characters who fondly recall how the Sketty area has evolved over the decades. Despite the current cost of living crisis and rising energy bills affecting many social clubs, the Sketty Club has not only survived but thrived, marking its centenary with a robust membership.
“While many clubs in Swansea have unfortunately had to close their doors, we’re proud to be bucking the trend,” said chairman Stephen Thomas. “Our community spirit and diverse activities have kept our members engaged and our club vibrant.”
Members of the Sketty Club benefit from a variety of activities and events, including trips to the Chepstow Races, an annual golf tournament, and an annual snooker tournament. The club also hosts occasional events featuring local sports stars such as Jonathan Davies, Alan Curtis, and Lee Trundle.
Members regularly gather to watch the latest sport on Sky TV whilst enjoying discounted bar prices via the club’s loyalty card, a popular perk among the members.
Recently the Sketty Club has expanded its offerings with the introduction of Klub Kitchen 83, a premier street food outlet now available for collection and delivery right in the heart of Sketty. This culinary hotspot has quickly become a local favourite, known for its distinctive home-made burgers and freshly crafted desserts.
As the club enters its second century, it invites new members to join and be part of its legacy.
“We’re always looking to welcome new faces and continue our tradition of camaraderie and community service,” said membership secretary, Andy Sarfas.
“Membership is open to men in the local area, and we’re excited to grow our community even more.”
