NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) – In North Platte, cycling is a beloved activity and many people enjoy exploring the city’s scenic trails, but there are some safety tips officers are wanting bikers to know before they hit the streets.

“If they’re going to drive on the right side of the road, they need be on the side closest to the curb and they need to follow the rules of the road like other motorists,” Sergeant Jeremiah Johnson said.

There are also numerous safety tips bikers should be aware of when cycling at night.

“If you’re riding a bicycle at night, make sure to wear reflective clothing and make sure to have a white light on the front of the bike that protrudes up to 500 feet,” Johnson said. “Also, have a red reflector on the back of the bike about 100 feet from the rear of the bicycle.”

Lastly, Johnson said it’s very important for bikers to check the conditions of their bike.

“It’s very important to ride a bike that is the right size and if the size is too big for a child or adult to maneuver or operate, it could create unnecessary falls and injuries,” said Johnson.
