From the StarPhoenix archives:

Returning to the form which he displayed in the spring meetings at Calgary and Winnipeg, Lynn’s Boy, owned by Circle Dot Ranch, and ridden by Gerry Lavigne, scored a three-length victory in the $1,000 Salisbury Juvenile Stakes, a five-furlong sprint for Canada-bred two-year-olds Friday afternoon at the Saskatoon Exhibition track.

Overlooked in the betting when the second largest crowd of the week made the Whittier Park Stock Farm’s Weyburn a 7-10 favorite, Lynn’s Boy returned $18.40 on $2 straight tickets. Norm Archer’s Napinka set the early pace with Lynn’s Boy closest in pursuit. The winner took command coming out of the backstretch and won with plenty in reserve. Weyburn ran over tiring horses to be second after being far back in the early running. J.S. Thomson’s Gladys T was third.

The winner was decorated with a floral horseshoe by Mrs. F.G. Salisbury and the stable received the Salisbury silver trophy. J.A. Charlesworth, Edmonton, won the race in 1952 with Virginia Fair. Virginia Reed, his entry this year, was fifth. …

The first race was more or less a family affair with Ted H, ridden by Lavigne, leading from start to finish and Taps coming to take the place from the favored Andy’s Gypsy. Ted H is owned by A.L. and R.G. Mathes while R.W. Mathes, another member of the Rimbey, Alta., family, owns Taps. The winner was second choice in the betting. …

Chattahouchee Smith’s Nickato, after three dull performances on Alberta tracks, came around the field in the stretch drive to beat Waza Walla in a photo finish in the seven-furlong Quinella race. The latter after failing to show any run here Wednesday, duelled with Ken Bojens in the early running, took command, but was not good enough to hold off the winner. Sun Aglow was third.
