Nascar navigated the breaking news of US president Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from reelection to post its second-highest viewership on NBC this season.

Confirmed:

Kyle Larson’s win averaged 3.63 million viewers despite being shifted to USA Network for its final 30 minutesThe race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) saw a 28 per cent increase in viewers and peaked at 4.5 millionIn Formula One, the Hungarian Grand Prix averaged 1.1 million viewers on ESPN, a three per cent increase on last yearIndyCar is yet to publish audience information for last weekend’s race in Toronto or the week prior at Iowa Speedway

Context:

Nascar’s viewership for the Brickyard 400 at IMS was its highest for four years, which considering the Biden news is very impressive. In terms of NBC’s run of covering the stock car racing series, only the Chicago Street Race has seen more average viewers (3.87 million). Nascar is now averaging an audience 3.15 million for its 2024 season, down from 3.18 million at the same stage last year.

Formula One has now hit six straight races of audiences over one million, which highlights the momentum the series is enjoying now the battle at the front has closed up. However, the 1.1 million viewers this year is actually down on the 2022 audience of 1.23 million.

While Nascar and Formula One are showing strong viewership, things aren’t looking as good for IndyCar. The series has not responded to requests from BlackBook Motorsport to release the audience figures for the doubleheader at Iowa Speedway, while last weekend’s race at Toronto was a streaming-only event. For context, this year’s Indianapolis 500 was the most-streamed IndyCar race of all time, but only recorded 286,000 viewers.

Coming next:

Formula One holds its last race before the summer break with the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps from 26th to 28th July. Nascar returns at Richmond on 11th August, while IndyCar holds fire for the Paris Olympics before its next race at Gateway on 17th August.
