The Horse and Jockey Hotel is honored to be displaying the iconic Lexus Melbourne Cup on Sunday, August 4 from 7pm before it travels back to Melbourne in time for the race on Tuesday, November 5.

Now in its 164th year the Melbourne Cup is the world’s richest handicap with prizemoney worth 8.34 million dollars together with the cup, which is kept by the owner worth 750,000 dollars making it one of the most prized trophies in world sport.

The cup is entirely handcrafted every year and made of 18 caret 100% Australian yellow gold on a wooden plinth made of Western Australia Jarrah.

It is known as the “Loving Cup” due to its design, the three handles symbolizing the relationship between the winning jockey, trainer and owner.

Champion trainer Dermot Weld made history in in 1993 when he trained Vintage Crop to become the first international horse to win the race thus starting a wave of interest from the northern hemisphere with Irish horses winning the race 4 times, Dermot Weld with Vintage Crop (1993) and Media Puzzle (2002) and Joseph O’Brien with Rekindling (2017) and Twilight Payment (2020)

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be up close and see the magic of such an iconic trophy. We have an evening of nostalgia, stories and video footage hosted by Jane Mangan and Johnny Looby, with former cup winning trainers and local horse racing personalities, followed by refreshments and music in the bar.

Admission is free and any donations will go to the Injured Jockey’s Fund.
