POOLER, Ga. (WTOC) – Pickleball is booming throughout the country and the Coastal Empire and Wednesday, the City of Pooler is unveiling brand new courts that anyone can play on for free.
There are eight pickleball courts and six tennis courts at the Pooler Tennis Complex which many players say are in high demand.
The almost $3 million project was first approved in September of 2022 and Wednesday, the courts are finally complete and ready to play on.
There is a local community in Pooler of pickleball players that say they’ve been traveling to other areas, like Richmond Hill, to get their games in but they’re happy that they’ll be able to now play right in their backyard.
“A lot of people are very excited for it. We have a GroupMe already and a Facebook page, and I think the GroupMe already has over 100 members and we haven’t even played a game here yet. So I know it’s going to relieve a little bit of pressure off of how many folks are at Richmond Hill. But I can guarantee you at least the first couple weeks here, you’ll have 60, 70, 80 people. I can almost guarantee that,” said pickleball player Joshua Hagan.
One local pickleball player says no matter what level you’re playing at, it’s good to see another way for community members to get active.
“The learning curve is very short for the basics, so almost anyone can come out here and play. So I think having the community come out and be social with each other, get more activities, get their blood pumping a little bit, is really important. Just getting away from the TVs and the game screens and such,” said Felicia Burch.
The courts open directly after a ribbon cutting ceremony which is at the complex at 9:30 a.m.
After that, the courts will be open each day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
It’s free to the public.
