UH swimming alumni set for Paris Olympics

Three former University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa swimming standouts will represent the Rainbow Warrior and Rainbow Wahine programs at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Kane Follows (2016–20) and Laticia Transom (2022–23) qualified for New Zealand’s national team and Micah Masei (2017–21) is slated to compete in his second Olympics for American Samoa.

Follows is entered in the 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter backstroke. He broke a 12-year-old national record in the event with a time of 1:57.13 at the Apollo Projects New Zealand Swimming Championships held in April.

Transom earned a spot with New Zealand’s Olympic contingent as part of the women’s 4×200 freestyle relay team. She claimed the 100-meter freestyle title at the New Zealand championships with a time of 53.94 and earned silver in the 200-meter free to secure her spot on the Olympic team.

Masei competed in the 100-meter breaststroke in the 2020 Tokyo Games for American Samoa and earned a trip to Paris for his second Olympics. He placed second in the 100-meter breast at the 13th Oceania Championships held in April in Australia with a personal-best of 1:04.64. He also won gold in the 50-meter breast in the meet.
