Tarka Trail named most Instagrammable and among top cycling routes in the UK

The Tarka Trail has been celebrated as one of the UK’s most picturesque cycling routes, according to a recent ranking by Go Outdoors.

Placed at number 6 on their list of top bike trails, the trail also earned the top spot as the most Instagrammable bike trail in the UK.

Go Outdoors highlighted the Tarka Trail’s prominence on Instagram, noting that it boasts an impressive 18,045 posts.

The trail, which stretches from Braunton to Meeth in Devon, is renowned for its stunning river views, historical railway infrastructure, and the scenic beauty it offers to cyclists.

The team at Go Outdoors said: “Among the most popular bike trails in the UK, the Tarka Trail comes out as the one with the most Instagram posts. The trail runs from Braunton to Meeth down in Devon, and there are currently 18,045 posts on the social media site. There’s a vast array of pictures of people biking and the gorgeous views of the river along the trail, as well as old railway infrastructure for those interested in trains.”

The ranking methodology employed by Go Outdoors involved a comprehensive review of biking trails across the UK.

The team analysed TripAdvisor’s “Traveller Favourites” to identify the top 30 bike trails based on popularity and the number of reviews.

They then assessed Instagram engagement for the hashtag “#NorthDevon and Okehampton” to gauge the trail’s visual appeal.

Additionally, they evaluated reviews mentioning the term “beautiful” to determine the trails that received the highest praise for their scenic qualities.

Inspired by Tarka the Otter, the Tarka Trail spans 180 miles in a figure-eight loop, exploring the diverse landscapes of North Devon.

Cyclists can experience a variety of terrains, from unspoiled countryside and wooded valleys to the dramatic sea cliffs and expansive beaches of the South West Coast Path.

The trail traverses through Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks, offering breathtaking views and a rich tapestry of natural beauty.

One of the trail’s notable features is its status as the UK’s longest traffic-free cycle path, connecting Braunton in the north to Meeth in the south via a former railway line.

This section of the trail enhances the cycling experience by providing a safe and serene route through the heart of North Devon.
